João entra pelo foyer do D. Maria adentro. Vai montado num cavalo de pêlo preto, que reluz os projectores da entrada, os castiçais, os candeeiros. A antecâmara da sala Garrett está à pinha com gays sofisticados, críticos cigarrentos, madamas eruditas e cheirosos estudantes de teatro. O cavalo avança em pizzicato; as patas derrapam no chão de pedra polida. Aproxima-se do bar, onde há uma carpete para o cavalo e café para João. Todos arregalam os olhos: os gays sofisticados, atrás dos seus óculos rectangulares de massa preta, e borrados de medo do cavalo, observam com atenção. Os críticos, com a atenção amolecida pela nicotina, acham que faz parte do espectáculo. As madamas fantasiam com o membro do cavalo. As estudantes de teatro limitam-se a gostar da performance. Apenas um velho de barbas, esparramando num dos sofás e estranhando um equídeo incontinente numa sala de fumo de um teatro, diz "Eh, pá, já deixavas, é o bicho à porta". João, pede o café, recebe-o numa mão. Faz um meio volteio para virar a cara do cavalo para a sala. Segura o pires na mão esquerda, mexe o café com a colher e pegando a chávena com a mão direita bebe sossegadamente.
